Notifications
Get notified of new messages in the browser, in the desktop apps and on Android, without the push services of Google or Apple.
Nodz does not use the push services of Google, Apple or Mozilla: they would learn when you receive messages. How notifications work therefore depends on where you use Nodz. They never contain the message text.
Choose what you get
In Settings → Notifications, choose Off, New message, or With sender (shows who wrote). The choice is saved encrypted with your account and applies to all your devices. Each browser or app asks for permission once; select Allow in this browser if it has not yet.
In the browser
You get notifications while Nodz is open in a tab, also when that tab is in the background or the window is minimised. With the browser closed there are none. The tab also shows how many messages are unread.
Windows and Linux apps
Closing the window keeps Nodz running in the system tray (by the clock), so notifications keep arriving. To really quit, right-click the tray icon and choose Quit Nodz. On Linux with GNOME, the tray icon needs the AppIndicator extension.
Android app
- Allow notifications when Android asks.
- Receive messages when Nodz is closed (in Settings → Notifications) keeps a connection to our server open, without Google. Android then shows a permanent, silent notification, which you can hide in Android's notification settings.
- Many phones stop background apps to save battery. Select Allow Nodz to run in the background and confirm, or notifications may arrive late.
- When Android has closed the app, you get a short New activity notification: open Nodz to read it.
Not getting notifications?
- Check that notifications are not set to Off, and that your browser or phone allows them for Nodz.
- Check your device's do-not-disturb or focus mode.
- On Android, check the battery setting above.
