Group chats
Create an end-to-end encrypted group, add and remove members, hand over the admin role, and leave or delete a group.
Groups are end-to-end encrypted with MLS, the standard for encrypted group messaging. Our server does not know who is in a group: it only passes on sealed messages.
Create a group
- In Chats, select New group.
- Enter a group name and the usernames of the people to add, separated by commas or spaces. You can add more people later.
- Select Create group. You are the group's admin.
The people you add get a request. Nobody in the group knows they have seen it until they accept; if they decline, they are removed.
Manage the members
Open the group and select Members (👥 at the top). The admin can:
- Add people by username, and Remove members. Removed members do not see new messages.
- Rename the group.
- Make admin: hand the admin role to another member. After that you can no longer add or remove people, rename or delete the group.
- Delete group for everyone: members keep their history, but nobody can send any more.
Every member can Leave group. The admin cannot leave: hand the admin role to someone else first, or delete the group.
Good to know
- People who join later cannot read earlier messages: those were encrypted before they were in the group.
- Each of your devices is a member of the group, so you can read along everywhere.
- If a member's key changes, you see a warning next to their name. Verify them before you continue.
